St. David’s United Church Offers Prayers For Serenity In A Time Of Decision Making
In the lead up to the October 19, 2026 referendum, St. David’s United Church in Leduc, Alberta, will be hosting silent prayer gatherings in the sanctuary at St. David's every evening from October 1 to 18 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
“The purpose for the meetings is not to have a discussion on any of the ten referendum questions. The purpose is not to tell anyone how to vote. It is, instead, meant to allow people to reflect, inwardly, in community. It is also for people for whom the referendum is causing anxiety, confusion, worry for what the referendum itself means, and what will come next, whatever the outcome on any of the questions,” said Rev. Leigh Sinclair, pastor at St. David’s. “Our faith community has chosen to offer a prayerful and safe space in the lead up to the referendum. People are in need of comfort and encouragement, and we wanted the community at large to know that they are not alone.”
“Besides the need for solace in a troubling time, people may also take this time to consider how it is they will be voting, and for what reasons. We want to offer our space for folks to consider their Treaty responsibilities and our belief in loving all neighbours, not just some.”
“The silent prayer evenings, therefore, are to allow not only for a place for calm in the storm, but also to invite the public to reflect upon and discern what the meaning of each vote will be, how best to live in community, and how to be a neighbour to one another.”
