Come As You Are
St. David's is church made up of people of all ages. Some have been coming to this church for years; some are new to Leduc; some have gone to other united churches in other places; some have a different church background; and for some this whole church thing is new. We are all welcome!
The Service
The church can seat more than 220 people; current attendance can be about 180 adults and children. When you arrive, you will be greeted and given a "bulletin" (see below). You are free to sit anywhere you like. Most Sundays, the adults and children begin church together with announcements, singing, scripture and story. Then those interested in being involved in Sunday School go to their classes, while others stay and share in a further time of singing, reflection and prayer. Most services last about an hour. After church, everyone is invited to share in an informal time of visiting and refreshments.
Sunday School
Adults, children and youth are all valuable participants in the life of the church. This is especially true at worship on Sundays. Most Sundays there are Sunday School classes for children and youth from age three years old and up. No pre-registration is necessary, everyone is welcome any week. On Sundays when there is no Sunday School, the worship service is planned as an All-Ages service, which the children should enjoy.
Nursery
Anyone of any age is welcome to stay in the sanctuary for worship. As well, the church has a special room where parents of small children (usually two years old or younger) can take them during the service if they would like. There are toys, books, videos etc. This room has a speaker so you can listen to the service. Ocassionally, there are caregivers in the nursery who will look after the children so the parents can return to the service; but parents are always welcomed to stay if they like.
Bulletin
The bulletin is a handout that include details of that Sunday's service and some news about church life. The bulletin clearly lays out times when people are invited to be more active in the service (saying prayers together, singing together, etc.). Our service style does not include any kneeling or other specific postures, although it is common for people to stand (as they are able) while we are singing together. The announcements section is sorted into four parts; "welcoming" - information about the day's worship service and other things that might be helpful for the day; "nurturing" - information to help people engage their spiritual sides, through events and ideas meant for inspiration and learning; "inspiring" - information on things to be involved in that impact the lives of people beyond our church; and "serving" - information and opportunities to help within the church.
Communion
We share this ritual common meal in the church as part of our regular worship services about once a month (usually the first Sunday). It is a reminder of the last supper Jesus shared with his followers just before his arrest and crucifixion.
It is an act of remembrance. Jesus told his followers to share meals like this as a way of remembering him.
It is an act of spiritual nourishment. Jesus told his followers to view the bread and wine as nourishment coming from him, even if his body would be broken and his blood poured out.
It is an act of unity. By sharing from a common cup and loaf, we are symbolically united with each other and with our Christ.
At St. David's, as in other United Churches,
we use non-alcoholic grape juice in place of wine.
St. David's practices an open table, where all who desire to share in this act of remembrance, spiritual nourishment and unity are welcome to partake, regardless of their age. Visitors, people from other churches, those long-time and new to this church and those who are exploring the place of faith in their lives are welcome to share communion at St. David's.
